Legal aspects of the video game industry, its protection via intellectual property rights, eplayers and case studies

On June 20, the webinar organized by the ASIPI Entertainment Law Committee, which had the maximum participation of nearly 300 connected people, was conducted by the following speakers: Andy Ramos Gill de la Haza (Spain), José Roberto Herrera (Colombia) and Chris Reid (United States).

The webinar had a massive participation of lawyers, entrepreneurs, developers and other people linked to the video game industry in different countries. The presentation was given by Fabrizio Modica (Secretary of the Entertainment Law Committee) who spoke about what the event in Puerto Rico meant and how the idea of ​​deepening the issue of videogames in a special panel arose within the committee besides to briefly explained the questionnaire on videogames prepared by the same committee.

Firstly, Andy Ramos spoke in English on aspects related to intellectual property of video games, legal nature, titleholders, authors and rights that are generated and new forms of exploitation: gameplays, e-sports and certain secondary exploitations of video games. José Herrera then took the floor and spoke in Spanish about legal protection of video games in Latin America via intellectual property rights (mainly copyright, trademarks, patents, publicity rights) and some references to protection of user data and eplayers, transfers of property rights from developers to production companies and casuistry in court litigation in sports. Finally, Chris Reid covered in English the general legal structure of the gaming industry and IP-related issues from the perspective of the United States, user-generated content and privacy issues: streaming rights / eSports and other uses of its online content, advertising rights and sponsorship - legal issues related to paid "influencers".

In conclusion, a rich discussion session was held with numerous questions from attendees of the three exhibitors who came to answer in their entirety, extending the panel to about 3 hours, keeping most users connected until the end.
