A path that seems easy and cheap: academic plagiarism and digital piracy

At an initiative of the ASIPI Copyright Committee, this Webinar was held on June 4, 2020.

Speakers were María Soledad Álvarez (Alvarez y Asociados) from Argentina, Virginia Servent (Intellectual Property Enforcement Americas) and Ignacio Andrade (Sfera) both from Guatemala.

Ms. Alvarez spoke about plagiarism in the academic field and made comments of an interesting ruling.

Ms. Servent and Mr. Andrade referred to practical aspects of fighting piracy and digital piracy, and to procedural aspects.

The event was moderated by Mercedes Castells, (Fischer Abogados) from Uruguay.

Regarding academic plagiarism, it was concluded that, without removing the issue of jurisdictional control, it is necessary to try its solution from the educational field, having good practices and clear rules that allow the early handling of situations related to possible academic plagiarism.

With respect to digital piracy and piracy, the need to protect intellectual property rights through direct and immediate actions was highlighted, the modalities and risks of piracy in the digital field were alerted,  and the different types of legal actions available were described, according to the type of infraction and according to the applicable legislation.
