Behind every major international sporting event lies a complex structure of Intellectual Property rights encompassing trademarks, emblems, mascots, anthems, designs, and official denominations. The effective protection of these intangible assets not only safeguards the interests of event organizers, but is also essential for host countries to fulfill the commitments assumed when bidding to host such events.
This panel will bring together officials from national Intellectual Property offices to analyze the registration, administrative, and cooperation mechanisms that their institutions make available to organizers of events such as the FIFA World Cup, the Olympic Games, and other global competitions. Topics to be discussed include expedited registration procedures, absolute grounds for refusal of signs associated with these events, ex officio monitoring and opposition mechanisms, coordination with international sports organizations, and the practical experiences of Latin American countries that have implemented special regulatory frameworks when hosting mega-events. The discussion will aim to identify regional standards and opportunities for harmonization in the protection of Intellectual Property related to sports.
