Entry Requirements During the COVID-19 Pandemic

All international tourists are permitted to enter Costa Rica by air, land and sea.

Tourists must meet the visa requirements, when applicable, as well as the requirements established in the framework of the pandemic.

The Government of Costa Rica does not require tourists entering by air, land or sea to present a negative COVID-19 test, nor quarantine upon arrival.

Tourists visiting Costa Rica are requested to abide by the sanitary protocols in place when participating in tourist activities throughout the country.

Entry requirements for those who are fully vaccinated:

  • To fit into this category, the person must have received an approved vaccine: Moderna, Pfizer, AstraZeneca, or Johnson & Johnson (both Covishield & Vaxzevria are accepted). The last dose of the vaccine must have been administered at least 14 days before entering Costa Rica.
  • They must complete the (online “Health Pass” from)48 to 24 hours prior to travel date.
    Proof of complete vaccination must be presented: a document that includes the person’s full name, date of each dose, formula, and lot number. For U.S. visitors, the Covid-19 vaccination record card meets the requirement.

Entry requirements for those who are not vaccinated:

  • Travel Insurance certificate or documentation that indicates the following:
    • Effectiveness of the policy in Costa Rica. This must be mentioned in the insurance document.
    • Guaranteed coverage of medical expenses in the event of becoming ill with the COVID-19 while in Costa Rica, for at least USD $50,000 (fifty thousand) per person. This must be mentioned in the document including the specific amount.
    • A minimum coverage of USD $2,000 (two thousand) for extended lodging expenses due to quarantine (equivalent to 14 days). This must be mentioned in the policy as well, including the specific amount.
  • They must complete the (online “Health Pass” from) 48 to 24 hours prior to travel date.
